How to tell if free lumber or plywood is still usable

Free building materials show up curbside more than people expect — leftover framing lumber from a small project, sheets of plywood from a remodel, fence boards from a teardown. Most of it is completely fine to build with. The problem is that "looks fine from the sidewalk" and "actually usable" aren't the same test, and the failure modes for wood are different enough from furniture that it's worth its own check.

Sight down the length of the board first

Before anything else, pick the board up and look down its length like you're checking a pool cue — this is the fastest way to catch warping, bowing, or twisting that's invisible from the side. A board that's cupped or twisted can sometimes still be used for something forgiving (blocking, bracing, non-visible framing), but it's a poor choice for anything where a flat, true surface matters, like shelving or furniture panels. Do this for every piece in a stack, not just the top one — wood that's been stored leaning or exposed to uneven moisture often warps unevenly, so one straight board doesn't tell you anything about the next.

Press for soft or spongy spots

Run your thumb or a key along the surface and press, especially near ends, edges, and anywhere the wood looks discolored. Sound wood resists; rotten or water-damaged wood gives slightly, feels spongy, or leaves a dent. Rot is often worse than it looks from a distance — a small soft spot on the surface can mean the damage extends further into the board than it appears. If part of a pile presses soft, it's worth spot-checking the rest of the stack rather than assuming it's isolated, since wood stored together usually shares the same moisture exposure.

Check plywood edges for delamination

Plywood fails differently than solid lumber — instead of rotting through, it delaminates, meaning the individual layers start separating and you can actually see gaps between them at the cut edges. Look at every exposed edge, not just the one facing you, since a sheet can look solid from one side and be visibly delaminating on another. Slight edge roughness from age is normal and not a problem; visible gaps between layers, or plywood that flexes with an odd hollow give when you press the middle, means the sheet has taken on water at some point and lost structural integrity.

Watch for old nails, screws, and embedded hardware

Reclaimed lumber and plywood scraps frequently still have fasteners in them — bent nails, screws, staples, sometimes hidden below the surface where an old cut or patch covered them over. Run a hand along the wood before cutting it, and if the piece came from a torn-apart structure, it's worth a quick metal-detector pass or at least a careful visual check before it goes anywhere near a saw. This protects your tools and your hands as much as it tells you anything about the wood itself.

The lead-paint question on old painted wood

If a board or panel is painted and looks old enough to plausibly predate 1978 — weathered fence boards, trim, salvaged framing from an older house — treat the paint as a potential lead-paint risk rather than assuming it's fine. This matters most if you're planning to sand, cut, or otherwise create dust from the painted surface, since that's how lead exposure actually happens. It's not a reason to skip every painted board you find, but it is a reason to strip or sand it outdoors with a mask, or simply choose unpainted material for anything you know you'll be sanding down.

Dimensional lumber holds up outdoors better than plywood does

If a stack has been sitting outside uncovered for a while, dimensional lumber (2x4s, 4x4s, fence posts) tolerates a fair amount of weather exposure in the short term — it can look weathered and still be structurally sound underneath. Plywood is a different story: because it's built from thin layers glued together, a single hard rainstorm without a tarp over it can be enough to start delamination that isn't obvious until you try to use the sheet. If you're choosing between two curbside piles that have both been exposed to the same weather, the plywood is the one to inspect more skeptically.

When in doubt, downgrade the use case

Wood that's borderline — slightly warped, a little soft in one spot, edges starting to fray — doesn't have to be a hard pass. It's often still fine for projects where appearance and load-bearing strength matter less: garden beds, compost bins, shims, backing material, or practice cuts. Save the material that passes every check for anything visible or structural.

The bottom line

Sight down every board for warping, press for soft spots, check every edge of plywood for delamination, and treat old painted wood as a possible lead risk before sanding it. Dimensional lumber forgives weather exposure much better than plywood does. A few minutes of inspection turns a curbside guess into material you can actually trust.
